Know the essentials and benefits of Vitamin B12

Vitamin b12 is a cobalt rich vitamin. It is a water-soluble cobalt rich protein which can be extracted through many food items such as animal products, dietary supplements and prescribed medication. Since this vitamin contains many forms of mineral cobalt hence compounds containing vitamin b12 are also sometimes called as “cobalamins”.

It is very important for the working of the body, lack of which can cause ineffectiveness in working, tiredness and early exhaustion. It is the vitamin that provides necessary energy for the working of the body and to perform essential day to day tasks. This energy is provided by the development of fresh red blood cells in the body, hence providing boost to the energy of the body.

Deficiency of this vitamin in the body usually leads to anemia. This is a condition which is caused due to lack of red blood cells as well as improper size of them. During this stage, these cells are not able to perform their functions properly and cause problems like early exhaustion.

Symptoms of vitamin b12 deficiency can vary in different stages. These symptoms can be easily visible or show effect in developed stages. In the early stage symptoms like tiredness, fatigue, lack of energy, early exhaustion, feeling faint, headache as well as lack of appetite can be observed. These symptoms grow more extreme during its developed stages and could involve problems like mouth ulcers, loosing sensation of touch, walking problems, vision problems, yellowing of the skin, psychological changes such as constant mood swings, irritation etc.

Though vitamin B-12 deficiency could be caused due to several factors such as improper diet or a vegetarian or vegan diet but the most common factor that causes the deficiency of this vitamin is the deficiency of pernicious anemia. It is an auto immune condition which is caused due to the lack of protein called as intrinsic which is responsible for the absorption of vitamin B 12 from the food into the body. This issue is although more persistent in the people above the age of 60 years.

This deficiency is although more common with the people following strict vegan or vegetarian diet. Animal products such as meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, etc. are considered to be the major source of this vitamin.  Due to the lack of these products in the diet of vegans or vegetarians, they have higher chances of suffering from this vitamin deficiency.

Since this is a very common disorder, 1 in 100 people suffer from this deficiency. Hence a constant and regular diagnosis should be done to keep a healthy check on the hemoglobin levels. This could be done by microscopic assessment of hemoglobin levels for a check on the vitamin B 12 levels as well as the quality of red blood cells in the body.

Ignoring early symptoms of this deficiency can be very dangerous and cause extreme effects to the body. Proper assessment and regular check up of the hemoglobin level should be done to ensure the right working and production of red blood cells.
